I wonder what Google will face during it’s teen years?
Changes Coming to Facebook, Will It Kill Google Plus?
It wasn’t too long after Google Plus was launched that Facebook made a counter move to Google Circles with giving Facebook users the option of selecting lists. It isn’t nearly as catchy as Circles, and with most Facebook users bulging with friends, the thought of organizing or re-organizing hundreds of friends is overwhelming to say the least; but a least the emergence of Google Plus pushed Facebook to improve their service.
Now that Google Plus is open to the public and the dust has began to settle, I’ve really began to question whether or not Google Plus isgoing to survive, let alone be a major player in the social media market.
Things weren’t looking good for Google, but now that Facebook has announced their biggest change, yet, Google Plus may still have a chance.

Google, In 1964
This is what Google looked like in 1964.
Violet Gaze sent in these great images from the 1964/1971 book Childcraft Vol. 6 How Things Change. The paleo-future view of education was exceptionally accurate compared to a lot of other predictions.

Google Plus came in with a fury of invitations and the web was buzzing with questions about the future dominance of Facebook.
Now that the web has settled down and Facebook has had a chance to hook-in new features that resemble some of the huge advantages of Google Plus (Circles), we begin to see the initial predicted doom of Facebook diminish.

I really like Google Plus. The only problem? Most of my friends are still on Facebook. The interesting thing, though, is that my Google Plus account is full of new friends.
So, who is on Google Plus, anyway?

How To Use Social Media To Create Community
Recently, Eric Dye wrote a great piece about How To Increase Your Church Facebook Traffic. If you haven’t read it already, go check it out now.
I was inspired by this piece to take it just a bit deeper in the larger spectrum of social media. You see, at the end of the day, it’s not just about getting likes, retweets, +1’s or any of the other digital affirmations that bombard our brains with an oxytocin fix. No, social media is about more. It’s about developing community.
For those of us in the Church, we understand the importance of community. Knowing how important it is we should take the time to be intentional about creating it in whatever space we can. Whether it’s within the four walls of the Church, a local Starbucks (yes please!) or in the digital space, community needs to be intentionally sought after.
