What if the Church was more like Google?

Episode One
On our first episode of the ChurchMag podcast we talk about the recent Google+ redesign, what would happen if the Church used Google’s 20% approach with Church tech teams, praise and worship teams and pastors, and we ask ChurchMag author Phil Schneider five questions.

Excited for the podcast and look forward to listening.
Can you tell me how you embedded the audio on your page? Our church publishes a podcast to iTunes but haven’t figured a great way to have the audio on our website.
THANKS!
Brandon Conn says
Two other things:
1. Is this the same audio from the podcast itself? What I mean is are you using the same file that iTunes is using to create this embedded audio?
2. When using Safari on a mac the audio file disappeared after I commented and can’t get it to come back. Shows up in Chrome on the same mac.
Brandon Conn says
One more thing… 🙂
I noticed in the player on the site it’s just labeled “Track #1” – is that a mistake or do you just not have the ability to change that with whatever service you are using? I know that would be a deal breaker for me if I couldn’t change it.
Eric Dye says
Yes, that can be changed. There is a list of items that can be added to the Jetpack shortcode.
Eric Dye says
1. Yes.
2. Hmmm … looking at using a different way to play the audio on the blog, maybe that will correct the Safari issue …
Brandon Conn says
Back again…
Just noticed it is flash. So never mind – it wouldn’t work on a lot of devices. If you have any other suggestions that would be great. I will leave you alone now.
Eric Dye says
Like I said, looking for a different in-page player, as I don’t want it running Flash. 🙂
Eric Dye says
We hope you like the podcast. 🙂
As for the player, we’re just using the WordPress Jetpack plugin using the audio shortcode. However, it doesn’t seem to be working well for mobile devices, so we may need to use something different. It seems to work great for desktop browsers, though.

Q1
It does look a little pinterest-y. But wait…who asked you that on google+?
Q2
Oh Google Glass. I feel like people have already given up on Google Glass before it’s even hit the waves yet. It’s very funny when you think about it. Not sure this is the right analogy but I feel like when the car first came out it was met with speculation yeah. Like…seriously, will this thing blow up? why do we need gas when we can just fee our horses carrots and fun on that? …etc. Google Glass will fail…maybe multiple times, but in it’s failure there will be success down the road I feel like. All Google has to be is patient.
Q3
Who doesn’t dig Terminator vision lol!
For me I’d do that versus that xray vision. With great power comes great responsibility, and that xray vision would be a tough one to handle responsibly.
Q4
I’d love if the church could do what Google does better. There are plenty of people who do this inherently already, the church needs to tap them and utilize what God has put in them.

Q6
Yes please

My two cents…
I think the church is really pushing things from my perspective. Not from a “c” perspective, but from a “C” kinda way. You have people like Jeff Sheldon from Ugmonk doing his thing. Scott Harrison of Charity: Water rock’n it. etc, etc. There are Christians who get the bigger picture and are contributing to the Lord’s flow in the world. It’s cool to see. So while the “physical church” may not be thriving like the world on all fronts technologically (some are…passion city, elevation, lifechurch, etc) the “physical Church” is thriving on all fronts.
Eric Dye says
My lips are seal, Marcus. 😛
You may be right about Google Glass. Perhaps it will only be a matter of time and it may not look like the current Google Glass, it will eventually make its way.
You’re right about the responsibility–sheesh! Never thought of that.
Only two cents? I would pay more for those thoughts… 😀
Thank you for listening, Marcus! Don’t forget to rate us on iTunes. 🙂

Q1 – I LOLed.
John Saddington says
this is awesome!
Eric Dye says
Thanks! 😀
Chris Ames says
Great job guys! Can’t wait to hear more!
Eric Dye says
Thanks, Chris!
Jason D says
Looking forward to more episodes,… can you provide the RSS feed for others who don’t use iTunes please 🙂
Also, there are alot of good HTML5 audio players which work on more browsers (for those earlier saying they are having flash issues)
Thanks!
Eric Dye says
Yeah, let me hook-up an RSS feed this week.
Is the current player not working? I had changed-out the Jetpack player for this very issue. Hmmm. I may need to try another player.
Thanks, Jason!
Jason Delgado says
No, it worked fine,… I too recently started a weekly podcast and had several request early on to get a RSS feed just for the podcast, since not everyone used iTunes and some people JUST use podcatchers of some sort.
Eric Dye says
Word. I really appreciate your feedback, Jason! RSS will be set when the next podcast drops next week. 🙂
