Video is a powerful form of communication in the online space – the challenge, though, can be the cost.
But thankfully there are enough open source platforms out there to entertain and challenge the high-cost alternatives!
Check out this one that I’ve been playing around with recently:
The Open Video Player (OVP) utilizes open standards, best practices, and has been used to solve advanced, scalable, and robust web-based media player applications in Flash and Silverlight.
Maintained by dedicated volunteers, it’s free and distributed “as-is”. I will let you know that it may take some technical expertise and experience to get one of these running.
Check out some examples here and here. You can also see a screenshot of some tests were doing with Akamai for North Point Online:
Finally, if this is too much work for you or if you’d rather have a helpful business help support and build an online video platform for you, check out 316 Networks and their online video platform!

Interesting. Can’t wait to see how open source video platforms evolve this next year.
