6 Game Changing iOS Apps

It’s incredible to think that the original iPhone came without an App store. All those games, tools and crazy features that have helped make the iPhone such a revolutionary product weren’t there at the start. However, now the App store is huge and contains a plethora of apps, some great, some fun, some terrible and some are just plain rip offs.

All this is to say that not all iOS apps are equal and some are much more revolutionary than others. Today I want to look at a few revolutionary iOS apps, ones that will completely transform how you use your device. [All these apps or features are specifically focused on iOS. NueBible: A Design Centric iOS Bible App

We’ve covered a lot of Bible apps here at ChurchMag and too often we focus heavily on the functionality built into these tools. Features like Bible reading plans, the ability to add notes, export notes, commentaries, sharing verses and so on. These are all great and we’ve seen some huge steps forward there, but sometimes I wonder if this has lead to a neglect of the design of these tools.

Well NeuBible is a new (pun not intended) Bible app from a small indie development team that takes a radically different approach to many others and focuses on design first.

Terrible at Design? Canva is for You

I’m not the best person at design in the world. Sure I can take an okay photo and I know a thing or two about okay fonts, colors and where to place text on a screen, but that’s where my skills really end. Anything beyond simple editing is a huge issue for me and I’m sure that the majority of people reading this are the same.

If you’re a professional designer you may well still find this interesting (and I’d love your more informed feedback) but this isn’t aimed at you. This is for the average person who knows a couple of things which look good but can’t make them. Maybe the small church plant who doesn’t have a designer in their congregation, or the church pastor who needs some great slides for this weeks sermon.

New City Catechism [App Review]

New City Catechism is an attempt by The Gospel Coalition to bring the tradition of studying the catechism into the ~~modern~~ digital age.

For those not in the know (i.e. those raised outside of church or in a non-liturgical church), a catechism is a series of questions and answers designed to help an individual or group of individuals learn basic and yet vital Christian doctrines.

Lists are amazing. I love lists. Whether’s Letterman’s Top Ten List—Dave, you will be missed—or those stupid “list-idles” that are so popular on the web, I have a deep, abiding appreciation for lists.

Especially when it comes to getting things done!

I’ve blogged a lot over the years about apps and notebooks and various things that could possibly/maybe sorta/kinda help one get their tasks organized and, more importantly, done. However, nothing has really made the different for me.

I tried Things. I tried Wunderlist. I tried Producteev. God, help me, I tried Reminders. Nothing did the trick, so I did it myself by going analog.

For about three months, I went old school. Yellow. Legal. Pad. Boom! Then, I added a clipboard and a manila folder, to complete the 1980’s trifecta. Check it out:

Taking the Leap from Android to Apple

It’s no secret… in a world of several OS choices, all of which tickle my fancy, Android tickles it the most. Customization, administrative privileges and the second best ecosystem in all of mobility are easy to fall in love with. I am quite comfortable using any of the major four, and to be fair, when it’s all said and done, I still believe it’s the ecosystem that makes or breaks the OS.

With regards to Apple’s iOS, my initial derision has mostly shifted to grudging respect and onto straight admiration. A lot of the gripes I have had in the past continue to get sidelined with every update to the OS, and the inherent smoothness of the OS matches the beauty of the hardware. Even iTunes doesn’t annoy as much as it used to.
