Microsoft has developed a technology that allows you to load batteries in any direction. What’s the name? Instaload!
… Seriously? Yes:
The technology is in the mechanical battery contact design. Each side of the metal contacts in a device have positive and negative points, rather than just a positive or negative point.
The technology works with most barrel-type batteries, so your AA, AAA, C and D batteries are all compatible. It also doesn’t matter whether the batteries are rechargeable or not.

Wow. The BeamBox Pico Projector is pretty darn sweet!
Powered by an LED lamp, it’s slightly bigger than a pack of cards. 25 lumens of awesomeness @ 640×480 resolution.
Sure, it’ll set you back about $200 though.
