Mashable and a few other blogs have been sporting these monsterous advertisements of recent and I find it extremely annoying.
And I can’t imagine that I’m alone in this boat, right? What if the 8BIT properties started rocking these behemoths?
Would you like us more or less? How much grace do you extend to online properties and their experiments with advertising?
Justin says
I totally agree – and unfortunately I design these advertisements. Most publishers only allow you to have them expand on rollover only, but I have been seeing more and more that allow it to open first, then close after 5-10 seconds (ESPN, Mashable, etc…). I guess it’s just an even better reason to install a Flash blocker.
John Saddington says
ah, you’re the blame!!!
just kidding.
Justin says
Haha – yes, I am to blame…
As a UX guy – it really pains me to make these.
David Knapp says
I am all for ads but I hate those type of ads. All of my ads go in the side bar. I even think it is okay to put one in the post every once in a while.
If you guys did it I would still read here because the content is good but I would waste my life scrolling to get to it.
David Knapp says
Oh yeah I also hate pop-up ads that say things like, “Feed the Children.” No reason to make me feel guilty right before I read a post about something more superficial.
Lori says
You know who has been doing this more? FoxNews.com and it is ticking me off…. I don’t mind ads I realize that is peoples revenue, but you this is going a bit far imho.
Stephen Bateman says
half screen ads aren’t nearly as annoying as the “please wait ten seconds for your page to load” ads.
Graham says
Agreed! As long as I can find the “close” button on the half-screen ad I’m okay.
I agree with John that they are annoying.
Aaron Melton says
As much grace required for the 2 seconds it will take me to block the advertiser’s domain.
I don’t have any use for invasive advertising on the web and I refuse to frequently visit any site that throws them in my face. Advertising on the side or embedded inbetween articles (or even inside RSS feeds, whatever) don’t particularly bother me, though.

But it’s beyond cable. It’s FIOS.
Josh Miles says
You know, now that you mention it….yeah, they’re sort of annoying. I haven’t paid too much attention to them when browsing sites. So, I’d say to give mucho grace….they’re just trying new things. Maybe they copied it from some other site that was successful. π
Nick Shoemaker says
Not much. I’ve gone to reading less and less mashable as of late due to these freaks in the ad world.
If 8BIT did this? I’d pretty much be staying in Google Reader, my commenting would drop severely and I would grow weary of reading in reader and commenting. Then my world would crash.
Something to that effect.
Don’t. Do. It. π
Jared Erickson says
John let’s start putting Big A ads up π
Jared Erickson says
I hate the ones that take up the full page.. and you got to find the “close” button.. arggg.
PhillipGibb says
half screen? here, please no.
Scott Magdalein says
Dude, rock the massive ads! I’ll buy one just to get you started! π
joanna says
Half screen ones are annoying, but I think the most annoying ones are the ones that start playing video or move/expand, getting in the way of what you were trying to look at.
Graham says
I agree they’re annoying… what’s more annoying is the 10 second video ads before a youtube video now. I understand why they do it… but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Vin Thomas says
I would be mad if I didn’t have Ad Block for my browser.
π
Stuart says
I understand the need for adverts and mostly I’m very tolerable of them.
The ones I detest though are the ones where you accidentaly (or not) move your mouse across an advert and it leaps out to fill your screen. Then you can’t see the subtly faded ‘click here’ to close box and end up refreshing the page or moving on.
There’s a reason folks run adblocker.
Tim McDaniel says
Big, annoying ads are just a sign that the blog owner doesn’t really value their content. If they don’t, why should I?
brett barner says
Probably less. But I just run AdBlocker, so it might not affect me as much.
This makes me think of Twitter. I’ve never continued to use something that breaks so often. It’s all about how good it is and how little competition is out there.
Tyler says
I mostly read good blogs in an RSS reader so it doesn’t bother me much.
