This is the seventh article in the series The Fight Against Porn series.
Filtering Internet at church is more than just setting up software for the church technology ministry. If we are owning the cause to fight against pornography, then we need to have a loving follow up conversation with people when they do look at porn. But how do you confront someone if they are church leadership? We have a couple of ideas for you to make the conversation go a little smoother.
- Have A Universal Policy Upfront
Hopefully every church is against pornography and at least has a basic understanding why it is wrong and how they would handle a situation if it came to the leaderships’ attention that someone had a problem looking at pornography. But do you have a covenant that you work with the members of the church to join in? Do you have them sign the covenant? Consider this: have a formal document for every church member to sign as they go through membership classes or join the staff of the church to not look at pornography and if they find they have a problem with it, they will seek out help. This goes for everyone, including the senior pastor. - Seek Outside Help For Pornography
If a member were to come to you for help about pornography, most likely the senior pastor would be the one to do the counseling. But what happens if it is the senior pastor that is struggling or a staff person that is worried about getting fired? Obviously these solutions would not work. Instead, before a crisis brews and you are in the heart of a difficult situation, figure out a better way to give counseling to those that need it on pornography. My recommendation is that you identify one great counselor that will be willing to take on a client or two when you need it.
These are just a couple of steps, but I’d love to hear what you do or what else you would add to this list.
