Earlier last week I purchased a copy of Pixelator to see if it was going to be a good alternative to Photoshop.
This week I’m trying out Acorn, a super-simple image editor “for humans”.
Here’s what I think so far:
The simple UI and easy to understand interface is spectacular. It’s not as robust a solution as Photoshop but for someone who doesn’t need all the fanciness of Photoshop (and who can’t afford it) this is great.
I’m going to purchase a copy for my wife as well so she can do some great image editing without getting confused with Photoshop.
By the way, once you buy it, they have an awesome “certificate” for you:
I think that’s pretty slick. Nice touch!

I’m always up for a good Photoshop alternative.
Unfortunately Pixelator fell short for me in quite a few ways (and I don’t even do really complicated design).
I’ll have to try this out.

Tried it out. Definitely a big set up from Pixelator
Great, typesetting
Decent layer masking
Useful set of effects (that look pretty good)
This may end up being my personal use image editor and design tool.

What advantages do you see with Acorn over web-based photo editors (Picnik, Slashup, etc.) as well as GIMP? I like the layers ability, but wondering if that justifies the $50 price tag or if there are other features you like that gives it a leg up over free solutions.

obviously off-line use! i do a lot of drafting and work offline.
