The internet has been blowing up about Gmail’s new call feature that’s now available and which they announced publicly.
I was able to get it to work yesterday and thought I’d throw a 2 minute video walking through it and a thought or two.
Watch it and respond after the jump!

Essentially I find it to be a very nice addition and one that I can definitely see myself use in the future.
The rates for international calling are really great too, which you can find here.
In typical fashion, Google has released a video of the service too:
What are your thoughts?

This is an amazing feature. Some places I go with my laptop and can’t get good cell reception, I can just use this. And since I have an Android phone, my call history syncs, so whether on my phone or computer, I can look and see who’ve called or who called me.
John Saddington says
it is pretty dope.

I tried this out last night too, but honestly find myself making phone calls less and less.
I wonder if in the distant future we will stop using our voices to communicate-
Goodbye telephone,
Hello TELEPATHY!
John Saddington says
i’ve been praying for this since …….

Love it. Tried it and it works great.
BUT.
Once again, the people at Google seem to rate Google Apps like Charlie Brown at Halloween. All the goodies for Gmail and nothing but rocks for Google Apps.
I mean, it isn’t that big a deal as I can simply have one browser open for Google Apps emails and the other for Gmail/Voice.
However, my contacts in Gmail are largely personal while the Google Apps one is business and I can see this being an amazing tool for people like me who utilize their Google Voice number for business.
John Saddington says
get off your horse!
๐
just kidding. love apps.

I’m in this boat with you Jay. I use the Google Voice extension for Chrome, but this would be so much more useful. Now they just need to combine both GMail Chat Call with Google Voice, and I’d be good!

I’m just blown away that you included your cellphone number or your google voice number, anyways it hasn’t rolled out to my account yet ๐
John Saddington says
๐ it is what it is.

I’ll be trying it out. I’ve found that I try out some of these new technologies while I’m traveling. Give it a couple more weeks, and I’ll be calling someone using gmail
