Twitter released a new Follow Button on over 50 “partner” websites, yesterday, and now you can add one to your site!
WordPress.com has built in some shortcodes and Twitter has a new Follow Button code generator to easily add your own.
Create Your Own
With only a few clicks, you can grab your own HTML code for your website.
- Drop in your username.
- Select background color.
- Show follower count?
- Select language.
Done!
Copy and paste the HTML in your website, and that’s all you need to sport the new Twitter Button.
If you’re a WordPress.com user, WordPress has set you up with some really easy shortcodes.
WordPress.com Twitter Follow Button
They’ve made this seriously easy. Copy and paste the shortcode into a post, page, or text widget (sidebar FTW!). Remember, replace wordpressdotcom with your own Twitter username.
- Button + Twitter Page Link:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’] - Button Only:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’ show_screen_name=’no’] - Button + Twitter Page Link + Follower Count:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’ show_count=’yes’] - Button + Twitter Page Link + Follower Count with HEX color code:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’ show_count=’yes’ text_color=’00ccff’] - Button + Twitter Page Link with HEX color code:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’ link_color=’00ccff’] - Grey Button instead of Blue + Twitter Page Link:
[twitter-follow screen_name=’wordpressdotcom’ button_color=’grey’]
These are some of the combinations, giving you an idea of how to configure each of the elements. There’s certainly a lot of flexibility, here.
WordPress.com has also updated and integrated Twitter’s new Follow Button into both their Twitter Blackbird Pie and Twitter Widget offerings.
Nice.
Will You Use It?
As Twitter tightens their API, it’s good to see them begin to expand and offer users solid ways to integrate Twitter into websites and blogs. However, I’m still curious see what happens now that Twitter has acquired TweetDeck.
What do you think about Twitter’s new Follow Button? Will you be adding it?

I’ll definitely be adding it once my site is up and running. The option for visitors to become a follower without leaving the site is highly beneficial.
Thumbs up to Twitter — took them long enough 🙂

still messing with positioning of it though. trying to not clutter everything up.
We will see what happens
Eric Dye says
Send us your link when you get it up, so we can check it out!
Nathan Creitz says
I slapped it on my front page as soon as I read your post. Thanks for the heads up.
Eric Dye says
Awesome! 😉
Eric J says
I tried to add it to our website but it was too wide for our 128px wide sidebar :(, once the redesign launches maybe then i can get it to work.
