From March 16th to September 30, 2012, The Smithsonian American Art Museum will exhibit The Art of Video Games.
Awesome, right!?!
The exhibit will survey the 40-year progression of video games as an “artistic medium.” Focusing on:
- Visual effects
- Creative use of new technology
- Influential artists & designers
They’ve divided eighty video games into five eras, twenty systems and four genres.
- 1970s to early 1980s – The beginning of home systems
- Early 1980s to early 1990s – 8-BIT 🙂
- Early 1990s to mid 1990s – BIT WARS!
- Mid 1990s to early 2000s – 2D to 3D
- Early 2000s to Now – NextGen gaming
