Portable photo technology has made taking a picture of yourself really easy, and has created the new phenomenon of #selfies.
You can make your claims as to whether or not they are narcissistic—I disagree—but like with most new things, there are some concerns that we must take into account.
The infographic, below, covers some basic facts about selfies, but the most important part to consider is ‘selfie safety.’
For instance:
- There are over 22,000 posts on Instagram containing the hashtag #drivingselfie.
- 10% of drivers under the age of 20 who were involved in fatal crashes were distract at the time of the crash.
- Drivers under age 20 have the largest proportion of distracted drivers.
These distracted driving stats are pretty alarming, but I think that has less to do with selfies and more to do with using your smartphone while driving—aka: texting and driving.
Can you think of anything unsafe about selfies—other than doing it while driving?
