Just about everyone knows making an image larger then it’s original size is a pretty big “no, no”.
But sometimes you have to break that unwritten law and nudge the image up a few hundred pixels.
Luckily there is a free tool that will help cut back the pixelation monster and give your images a crisp look.
Check it out…
Bump It Up!
SmillaEnlarger is an open source project that is available on both Windows and Mac. It provides a super user friendly interface, the ability to drag your images in and drop them to process, and batch processing for multiple images.
To test it out I used an 800 x 755 px image of my wife and bumped it up to a 4800 x 4530 px (roughly %600 times the original size)
For all you control freaks you can also play around with the settings and create your own presets.
Don’t get me wrong Photoshop has gotten better at resizing images over the years (especially CS5) but for someone on a budget or to have a few options SmillaEnlarger is a must have for your arsenal… and you can’t beat FREE!
Whoot!

Awesome.
I’ve been on the hunt for a decent priced image enlarger and as you say – you can’t beat free.

The Gimp Resynth plugin also includes a smart resizer as well (in addition to the content-aware fill that CS5 made famous a couple months ago by finally including it). I’ve only used the resizer a couple times with mixed results depending on the image. It’d be interesting to send your image through it to see how it fairs against Smilla.
Thanks for another open source software plug!

Great resource. Sometimes you just find yourself stuck with that image that’s just a bit too tiny..
