Google has made a huge play this year to get their Android operating system into the market and eat into some of Apple’s market share that it has dominated in with smart phones. With this investment of the Android OS, we have seen huge strides and development in mobile operating systems and how they can integrate practically with your life. Even better, the costs of these systems seems to also be dropping, even if it is only $50 this year.
Here are a couple of specific things from the infographic.
- There are more than 250 million Android devices activated a year, more than twice Apple devices.
- Android OS has taken over iOS in the mobile market this year.
- Google’s revenue was more than $1 billion in just the fourth quarter, much from Google Play, Androids version of the App Store.

I’ve been firmly in the grasp of iOS since 2007, but I do think it’s time for there to be three big players in the marketplace. I’m thinking of switching to Windows phone 8 as I don’t think a duopoly is good for the market. I’m also hoping that the Canonical Linux thing that’s happening takes off. The Orr players the better.

Yes, the more major mobile OSes there are, the better off we’ll be.
Never thought that Android would be as big as it is today when I first dabbled in it.
