A few years ago my office had a competition to see who could close the most work orders. I busted my tail and won the competition. My prize? A 1gb flash drive (It was like 2006, those things were expensive back then!).
I was told to talk to the secretary to claim my prize. She directed me to a website called Funding Factory and to pick out which 1gb drive I wanted.
I completely forgot about the site until my new boss was looking for a way to get rid of old printers. The recycling company told us we had to remove all ink cartridges before they would pick them up. That left us with the infamous question:
What do we do with all the empty / old / expired / messy / gross cartridges?
My memory reminded me of Funding Factory (FTW)!
Funding Factory is a company designed to help non-profits (read: churches) recycle old ink and toner cartridges along with with old cell phones. They send you UPS labels and boxes to send back the old materials. In return, they give you points which you can redeem toward stuff, or cash.
The “stuff” you can pick out includes flash drives, RAM, hard drives, cameras, computers, UPS backup systems, and much, much more. The best part?
It’s free.
Seriously. No strings attached, no gimmicks, tricks, riddles, trolls hiding under bridges, or loop-holes. All you have to do is sign up your institution (must be non-profit or education) and start collecting your recyclables.
This is a pretty cool solution for under-funded IT departments and churches alike. You can ask your congregations to bring in their old print cartridges for recycling (did I mention? Funding Factory will give you posters to use for free and gain the ability to get free stuff or cash).
Think about it, your church can be good stewards, green, and make a little extra to supplement your budget.
Sounds like a win-win to me.
