There was a storm created yesterday with a iPhone 4 Tethering App that had somehow snuck itself into the Apple Store via a classic “Easter Egg” style feature and then was quickly removed by Apple.
A friend managed to catch the news, give me some deets, and I had enough time to download the app and test it out (99 cents).
My friends, it worked.
Last night I tried a few times to get it to work without success but I was apparently doing it wrong. I managed to get it to work today though.
(Yes, I have a pink elephant background on my iPhone 4…)
I was pleasantly surprised that it worked.

I suppose I’m just curious what your thoughts about this scenario are? Was it right that the developer put in a tethering functionality as an Easter Egg? Should Apple have pulled it down? Would you have used it if you got it?

I would definitely have used it. Mainly on the road (when someone else was driving of course) and in the airport. Very sneaky and I like it.
On a side note…love the input boxes on the comment. Very, very cool. Need to get some of that lovin’ on my Standard Theme and Intense Debate. Good stuff bro.

Apple had to pull it since the app violated the Terms of Service for developers. If they didn’t they would be setting themselves up to having to allow almost any app, I think.
I got the app, too, and I’m not sure how much I’ll end up using it. I don’t find myself in need of tethering very often, but I figured it was worth the $1 to have the option. I’m just not sure how AT&T will track it. Other wireless providers worldwide allow data tethering, so it’s not so much an Apple issue but that AT&T is not allowing it.
Overall, it made me laugh and it’s an impressive feat considering the developer is apparently only 15 years old: http://nick.nickplee.com/?p=about

As soon as I read this early today I went on a search to find it, but it had already been removed.
I definitely would use this app.

That pink elephant cracks me up.
Of course Apple had to pull it down. I’d be nervous to tether when I only had 2GB worth of internet a month.

I got it. 🙂 First off, that 15 year old kid is brilliant. Second off, I don’t think it is fair to the At&t for the consumer to use it, although, I definitely don’t think its fair for At&t to charge $20 a month just for the ability to use your data you already purchased on your computer.
Sadly there isn’t an in between option.
So yes, I will be using it on occasion.
