Smartphones. Tablets. This is some of the mining that goes on in the Congo for the minerals that are used to power our gadgets:
I don’t know about you, but the idea that this is what it takes for us to have iPhones and iPads is troubling—unsettling even.
As Christians, we are called to a higher calling. We are suppose to help the poor, not enslave them.
Now, I understand the problem isn’t simple. It’s very dynamic. In fact, these photos are from a National Geographic story has a positive storyline underneath, as regulations and changes in the Congo is improving the wages and conditions of miners by curbing militia controlled mines.
Still, though, I think this is food for thought. Something to think about before rushing out for the next new thing and jumping on another upgrade. This is a part of our device’s story. Unless you’re using a fair trade phone, it’s difficult to know just how much turmoil another human being went through to make sure you can Instagram your dinner.
