Yesterday, we covered some Essential Ubuntu 11.01 Tweaks.
Many in the Ubuntu community have found the new Unity interface to be a bit on the annoying side. A huge change and leap from before. Users can jump back to the old style, but then they forfeit those positives that come with the new Unity setup.
So, here are some more essential Ubuntu 11.01 tweaks to take care of some of those things that have been annoying you, so you don’t have to give-up Unity entirely.
Get Dropbox to Show Up on the Unity Panel
Linux terminal
cd
wget http://webupd8.googlecode.com/files/fixdropbox
chmod +x fixdropbox
./fixdropbox
Now, don’t panic when you don’t see Dropbox show-up right away. This starts-up Dropbox with a 20 second delay, so that it always starts.
Add Quick Access to Downloads, Pictures, Documents and Video Folders
Linux terminal
echo "[Desktop Entry]
Name=Home Folder
Comment=Open your personal folder
TryExec=nautilus
Exec=nautilus --no-desktop
Icon=user-home

[Downloads Shortcut Group]

TargetEnvironment=Unity" | sudo tee /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop
Forget getting to these files by way of Dash, add quicklists to the Nautilus Home folder launcher is the way to go! If this doesn’t take care of it for you immediately, just log out or restart Unity.
Remove Unity Places Files and Application Shortcuts from the Unity Launcher
Clicking the Ubuntu logo in the top left corner of the screen and then “More Apps” or “Find in Files” will let you access the Unity Places Files / Applications. You can also directly search in Dash for an application name. However, 2 more shortcuts are placed on the launcher that serve the same purpose: Unity Place Files / Applications:
Who needs it both places?
First, backup the original files into the “backups” folder:
Linux terminal
mkdir ~/backups
cp /usr/share/unity/places/applications.place ~/backups/
cp /usr/share/unity/places/files.place ~/backups/
Now hide the Unity Place Files icon:
Linux terminal
sudo sed -i '14i ShowEntry=false' /usr/share/unity/places/files.place
Hide the Unity Place Applications icon with this:
Linux Terminal
sudo sed -i '12i ShowEntry=false' /usr/share/unity/places/applications.place
Log out and then back in again, or run “unity — replace”.
If you change your mind, remove the first “ShowEntry=false” entry in these files:
- /usr/share/unity/places/applications.place
- /usr/share/unity/places/files.place
Or, restore that beautiful backup file you created:
Linux terminal
sudo cp $HOME/backups/*.place /usr/share/unity/places/
