You’re up and running with Ubuntu 11.04, but there are a few things bugging you?
Or maybe just, buggy?
There have been an unusual amount of critiques and complaints about this latest Ubuntu release. However, there are plenty of good steps forward.
Instead of giving-up entirely on the new Unity interface, here are some tweaks that may take care of some of those things that have been annoying you.
Install CompizConfig Settings Manager to Tweak Unity
Linux terminal
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Look for the CompizConfig Settings Manage in your Dash, and you’ll see the Unity options under “Unity” Compiz plugin. Check through the options, you can change the Unity launcher reveal mode, hide behavior, and a number of other valuable tweaks.
More Hidden Unity Settings
Linux terminal
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
This will install dconf-tools, so then by pressing ALT + F2, enter “dconf-editor”, then you can look under desktop > unity.
Fix the AMD (ATI) Graphics Card Performance Lag with the Latest Catalyst 11.04
If you’ve followed through with the first tweak, simply go to the CompizConfig Settings Manager, open Dash, go to “OpenGL” plugin, and uncheck “Sync to VBlank”. That should fix it!
Monitor Your RAM and CPU Usage
Linux terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexeftimie/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-sysmonitor
This is a total Unity FAIL. The Unity top panel doesn’t support applets, just AppIndicators. Do not fear! There is an AppIndicator that will display your RAM and CPU usage. Drop the code in your terminal, launch System Monitor Indicator from Dash, and that will allow to keep your usage in-check.
Firefox 4 Windows Style Menu
Open Firefox. Go to your Addons Manager, disable the Global Menu Bar Integration extension. Restart Firefox, then simply right-click the menu to deselect the Menu Bar.
Hopefully these will help you on your Narwhal journey.
Look for some more tweaks, tomorrow!

Good tips, i’ve been using ubuntu since the first release and i must say 11.04 has been a huge jarring change, which was much worse than when they moved the icons to the left side. That said my ubuntu box is no longer my day to day machine so i’m not too worried.
