Wow. What I find most interesting is that any one character by themselves probably would be unrecognizable. If you had simply handed me “Homer Simpson,” it would have meant nothing to me.
Maybe I’m over thinking this, but perhaps we need to spend more time considering how something’s context gives it meaning. What does this mean for our creative work? How might a video communicate something different if delivered on an iPad versus a projection screen? With the later, how does stage design either contribute or detract from the intended meaning?
Reminds me a little bit of what Marshall McLuhan had to say: “The Medium Is the Message.” Maybe we could also add: “The Context Is the Message.”
