As shiny as Apple computers are (and as often as I lust after them), I’m not sure if I could justify dropping the money on one when I could get a PC with the same computing power for a fraction of the cost. At least, not until I’m rich. Whenever that is.
Eric Dye says
I know what you mean.
James Cooper says
This is a few years old now but I think it still holds true. If you spec out a PC to be *the same as possible* as a Mac (so hardware, software that comes bundled, care, etc.) the price isn’t as different as you’d think (or macs can be cheaper!): http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9023959/Mac_vs._PC_cost_analysis_How_does_it_all_add_up_ An interesting read!
Eric Dye says
Great read, James.
Thanks for sharing!

I’ll echo what Eric said: Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if the calculation of stock price includes stock splits that could cause the price of the stock to remain low.
Alex Humphrey says
That’s an interesting point.
Eric Dye says
A very good question!
Ben Miller says
The graphic does not include stock splits, making it very misleading. If you bought a share of Microsoft on opening day (3/13/1986) for $27.50, then that share on the last day of the graphic (June 2011) would be worth $6914.88. The graphic makes it look like you would have lost money. If you had bought a share of Apple on the same day for $24.75, at the end of the chart it would be worth $2704.32 in June 2011.
Someone can check my math if they like, but it looks like an infographic fail to me.
Eric Dye says
I agree. Total FAIL. Thanks Ben. You’re awesome (especially at long division).
Allan White says
Oh, my. I usually adore the infographics you guys post, but this one is so gawdawful it’s really hard to look at, visually. Designed in Powerpoint? =)
Eric Dye says
Corel Draw.
Marcus Williamson says
Someone should redesign it ๐
Eric Dye says
We’ll assign that to you, Marcus. ๐
Marcus Williamson says
Doesn’t matter who wins ๐
Eric Dye says
Agreed. I’m glad the competition is heated. If it wasn’t, we would all be stuck with the blue screen of death.

Straight from Mac store: 2.8 Quad Core- 3Gigs of RAM- 1 Gig Video Ram – $2499
TigerDirect i7 PC: 3.4 Quad Core – 8 Giigs Ram – 1 Gig Video Ram – $999
Big difference to me.
Eric Dye says
Dude! Awesome break-down!
I nabbed my XPS with double the features and half the price.
Jason McCranie says
When I customized up to a 3.2 on a mac with 8 gigs of Ram it made the cost $3,274.00. This doesn’t compare to the price of a PC. You say the quality is so much better? I can buy 3 PC’s for the price of one mac, if one breaks I can use another!
Eric Dye says
LOL!
You’re awesome, Jason.

Eric Dye says
Is it tied to the email you provided?
Jason McCranie says
Its tied to [email protected]
Jason McCranie says
Ahhhh now I see how it works.

What really grates my carrot is how people equate PC to Windows. I’m sorry, I have 4 PCs at home, and none of them run Windows! Please can we stop talking about PCs when we mean Windows.
Now that I got that out my system….
To be honest, I don’t care much for either Microsoft or Apple. Microsoft is greedy for money, and Apple is greedy for iControl. Both companies lock you in to their products as much as possible.
Apple releases some of their software for Windows because if they want to actually make a profit on those they need the large user base. The rest of their software (Garageband, Keynote, etc) is available on Mac only, including their operating system. You want OS X? You gotta buy a Mac. And as Jason said, Macs are expensive. Maybe not so much in the USA, but here in South Africa they cost as much as 3 times the price of a PC.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has managed to keep their monopoly on the PC market. They make PC sellers sign agreements to sell only Windows, with the result that no one knows that there’s anything else available for the PC.
They also enter into “educational” deals where they give universities a blanket license to install Windows and other Microsoft software as many times as the institution wants. The outcome? All your university graduates learn Windows and only know Windows. They don’t know that there’s other software out there, and they have been “brainwashed” into the Microsoft camp.
The outcome? Both Apple and Microsft win. You lose, however.

As if to further prove my point, I just came this article: http://paidcontent.org/article/419-apple-has-finally-pulled-financial-times-from-ios/
Not even other companies win when it comes to Apple. Only Apple wins.
Eric Dye says
Sheesh.
