Although this report is a bit “old” in and has already been covered around the blogosphere, but I thought I’d make sure that this crowd here at ChurchCrunch was made aware of it (and that Mars Hill Church gets the kudos they deserve).
Mars Hill Church is Tweeting it up, and although not a new concept and certainly not the first ministry to do it, it created enough noise to gather the attention of MSNBC. You can watch the live video coverage here of the actual report.
Using the hashtag #mhc, they invade the twitterverse on Sundays, getting the word out wherever Tweets can be seen.
But here’s one of the coolest things: It hasn’t necessarily been a groundswell birthed by the congregation only, the administration and leadership team have been not only responsive but very encouraging in terms of their members “tweeting during service.”
They even blogged about it explicitly telling the congregation to join in the goodness. They call it an “experiment” with 3 stated goals:
- Learn by exchanging insight from the service.
- Encourage one another by reading and writing about what’s going on at all of the campuses.
- Understand the greater scope of God’s work through the ministry of Mars Hill.
I really dig what Mars Hill Church is doing, and I especially love the leadership-level backing that they are giving to the use of it, which, I feel, is sorely lacking in a lot of ministries.
As leaders begin to embrace web technology the congregation can feel even more empowered, instead of looking like a “rogue technologist.”
Although, I do like “Rogues” alot… especially Gnome Rogues named Stakato.

I first thought that they posted the tweets on the screen up front . . . that could add some new dynamics to the service. 😉

I'll wait for Andy (Stanley) to pause during a sermon, whip out an iPhone, and put the "take home message" online. 😉
