Apparently the Pope’s technology team either was caught sleeping or is grossly understaffed, or doesn’t know how to use Google, from an article from CNN.
The Pope, who lifted an excommunication charge on a Holocaust-denying Bishop, would have saved himself disgrace if he (or his staff) had done a quick Google search on the man, Bishop Richard Williamson.
The Pope, backtracking just “a tad,” made an appeal to more use of the interwebs in the future:
“I have been told that consulting the information available on the Internet would have made it possible to perceive the problem early on.
“I have learned the lesson that in the future the Holy See will have to pay greater attention to that source of news.”
Amazing, that Google monster, right? Apparently Bishop Williamson has “apologized” but not recanted his previous sentiments on the matter.
Oh, the power of the interwebs.
On a personal sidenote, I’d love to know who “runs” technology for the Catholic Church. That would actually be pretty interesting to know.

The problem is that the Pope requested Catholics to give up Internet use for Lent. So, kinda hard to look up this stuff on Google during this time. 😉

*sigh* of course the Pope’s not perfect, and the Pope didn’t request that Catholics give up Internet use for Lent (some Italian bishops/priests suggests Catholics give up forms of “virtual entertainment”). Also, I’m not sure where you get “backtracking” from…. It’s not like the Vatican has been shy in using the web, even if there’s a lot of room for improvement.
I’m not sure if there’s a “CTO” for the Catholic Church, but Sister Judith Zoebelein runs the Vatican website.

ps… there must be some sort of bug in the comment timestamping, because mine was just timestamped earlier than the three that preceded it!
