Back in the 90’s, we used to pay for our Internet service by the minute. No unlimited access (unless you had, you know, unlimited funds). Then, towards the end of the decade, that all changed with a flat free for unlimited access. Win!
Right?
It’s funny – web hosting has somewhat of the same history. You used to pay based on how much you used, but now you can get obscene amount of space and bandwidth for next-to-nothing.
But what if that’s overkill? Perhaps you need an alternative. Check it out…

I can distinctly remember when I worked in the bowels of hell (literally) in a collocation facility that after a long and dark night of working by myself with only the sounds of rotating hard drive disks to comfort me, the sound of a human being’s voice when I left was almost startling.

Don’t forget what humans sound like.
Remember Limewire? Remember Kazaa? Remember Napster?
All of those once-great applications are barely remembered now as Peer-to-Peer software has been shutdown through federal courts in light of copyright infringement. Yesterday Limewire got another hit by courts finding the owners personally liable.

A pretty insane statistic (and milestone) by Google was marked a couple of days ago when they announced that 8 out of 16 million US college students are plugged into Google Apps.
In addition, more than 80% of US schools have moved to cloud-based computing in some of fashion.
I wonder where the Church is in terms of similar statistics? It will be the day when 50% of the evangelical church is on Google Apps, let alone some form of cloud computing.
If there are roughly 310k+ evangelical churches out there, how many do you think are running something in the cloud?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been caught on the road and I need to do something to a server – typically it revolves around something as simple as changing a filename, confirming a folder-structure, or just changing permissions.
And for the most part I can’t do anything until I get home.
Thankfully, there’s an App for that…
