I’m not doing much web server architecture anymore but I still try to stay up-to-date with some of the new environments, best practices, and setups that people are creating.
Mongrel2 captured my attention because of of its ideal to be an application, language, and network architecture agnostic web server.
It’s goal? To be used specifically for web apps. Well guess what…? That’s what we do. I have to pay attention!

Web filtering is common in business and is becoming more common in churches and ministry.
Where I work, surfing social networking sites, streaming music and other activities started getting out of hand. In addition, many of these sites are often infected with malware and spyware and became a drain on IT resources. Give somebody an inch and they’ll take a mile. Upper management finally decided that web filtering was required.

I was working on a client’s site last weekend and needed to do a backup of all their old content [images, media, rich text] but was unable to find an export feature on their CMS.
In fact, there was really no way of even getting in to the system via FTP either. So, I needed an app that could download and save the site locally for archiving and future excavation.

Temperature monitoring and alerting on a small budget – sounds good, right?
In our small office, we have four servers, switches, a telephone system, and several UPS units in a small wiring closet. I need to make sure that I know if the closet starts to overheat, but most environmental monitoring systems are targeting the bigger datacenter market.
My first ray of hope was discovering the USB Thermometer from PCsensor.com. I got it on eBay for $17, and you can now get it directly from PCsensor.com or on eBay for between $10 and $15 with shipping.

One of the things that Microsoft has done consistently is cater to Windows developers. For years now, they’ve provided resources, tools, and other material to make it easy to get started in building applications for their operating system. They even provide express editions of their enterprise level development tools for hobby programmers.
Unfortunately, development on local Windows installations has been somewhat of a challenge because the local development environment often varied from production-level hosting environments.
Looking to mitigate this, Microsoft published WebMatrix – a web development framework seeking to make it significantly easier to build web applications on top of Windows.
