The first ‘h’ is silent and the ‘g’ is pronounced like a German/Scottish ‘ch.’ Â Originally an Orthodox cathedral, and converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453, t’s been an Istanbul/Constantinople landmark for over 1500 years. One of the most well-known and recognizable examples of Byzantine architecture.
