HTML5 is a beast and that’s where the internet is headed (sorry IE) and if you’re not with it then you’re going to be left seriously behind.
But it’s not necessarily the easiest thing to jump into, especially considering the documentation is a bit abrasive on the mind (and eyes).
Thankfully a bunch of guys have crafted a much easier document that’ll help you better understand what HTML5 is about and how you can use it for awesomeness.
This HTML5 specification is like no other—It has been processed with you, the humble web developer, in mind.
The focus of this specification is readability and ease of access. Unlike the full HTML specification, this “web developer edition” removes information that only browser vendors need know.

I would also recommend Initializr – http://icio.us/gD1Fu1 (sorry for formatting, pulled from my twtter favs) – as it would allow some devs to not just work the exqmles in that resource, but get to example projects and deliverables faster.
