There has been no shortage of rumors circling around the Internet of Google launching their own version of Facebook.
Certainly, the fact that we refer to something as “‘Fill-in-the-blank’ version of Facebook”, gives us some perspective on how established the Social Media giant has become. Google is hoping it can grab some of the market by default. Google’s vast collections of resources and tools that are used by millions, all have their own user accounts. This naturally gives Google a decent potential users base to start with, something a small upstart doesn’t have.
But, is that enough?
The flip side to this strategy is this: Orkut and Buzz.
Double FAIL.
Now the rumor train is in the station and loading up some new names: Google Me and Google Circles. Google recently updated their users Google Profile page, only fueling the idea that Google is getting them in position to launch something of its own.
I believe there is a path to victory. Whether Google has found the path, remains to be seen.
Facebook is big, but Facebook is young.
Remember AOL.

And don’t forget the upcoming changes to Blogger and comments in Google Docs… those can dovetail right into a Facebook clone very well…

Not to mention that Facebook has to play with Skype while Google just sits back and uses its own Google Voice.

I think you’re right, there is a path to victory, but I doubt Google has found it. But you have to give them credit for trying! By Thomas Edison’s methodology, they’ve already found a dozen ways of NOT doing social media right.

Here’s my own little personal theory:
A little awesome upstart nails it, get’s bought by Google, THEN Facebook gets their boat rocked.

Wow – brilliant. I think you are on to something…
