With rumblings of SOPA and attacks from Anonymous, the Internet resembles the Wild Wild West.
It’s a new frontier that asks more questions than it answers while at the same time, capable of answering any question you could ever imagine. More websites are added daily and the sea of data rises minute by minute.
But does it do any good?
Yes.
Reddit Raises $70,000 for Orphans
In less than 24hrs, $70,000 was raised for the Faraja Orphanage in Ngong, Kenya.
Here’s how it went down:
The Faraja Orphanage is home to 35 boys and girls, ages ranging from two to seventeen. The orphanage was attacked by thugs, again, but this time they left a mark.
A man by the name of Omari single-handedly protected the orphanage, but paid a price:
Photos of Omari were posted on Reddit just after being released from the hospital, asking for $2,000 to help build a security wall around the orphanage. In less then 24hrs, $70,000 was raised!
Go team Internet!
If you’re interested in making a donation, the Longonot Education Initiative seems to be handling the money. As you can see, the orphanage’s residents are already very happy with the news.
The extra funds will be used for food and supplies.
Leveraging the Internet for Good
It’s great that we can use the Internet for communication, entertainment and knowledge, but the Internet can be used for so much more!
Believe me, I’m all for Internet fun. From Wikipedia to Facebook and online games galore, the web is full of things to read, watch, do and explore.
The World Wide Web is like a huge Swiss Army knife, but we seem to keep fiddling with only a few of the gadgets.
Let’s start thinking past the edges.
Using the Internet, what more could we do to change the world around us in a positive way?
