This happens all the time, by the way.
I can’t remember, ever, a time in an IT environment (or even a web-environment) where there wasn’t some music being played, either publicly or in each programmer headphones.
It’s apparently just something that tech-heads do.
So… what about you?
Shawn says
Always. Nearly every second that I’m working/creating… and it’s always been that way for me. The genre changes per project, but something’s always playing.
Tom says
Absolutely. I’m happiest when I’m coding with my [noise-cancelling] headphones on.
Sean R Reid says
I can’t work in silence. I often switch between music and podcasts though. It really depends on how much attention I need to give to the task at hand. If I can get away with paying attention to a podcast while working on a site then that’s my preference. But at those times where I’ve really got to dig in I usually grab some 80’s Hair Metal to blast in the background. I don’t necessarily listen to the music but it makes for a great soundtrack and destroys the silence (Power Chords FTW!!).
Josiah says
Hahahaha – SO TRUE!
Greg says
Music HAS to be playing….that’s a rule….I know it is….lemme find the wikipedia link. 🙂

I absolutely have to listen to http://www.bassdrive.com while coding. Drum n Bass just seems to focus me on my work.
Jon Smith says
Wait, you’re telling me there’s a way to work without music?
Jeremy says
i work in a room with 8 people, so usually i have music going…
but pretty often, i just put on my headphones WITHOUT music so when someone calls my name I can ignore them and pretend I don’t hear.
Joel says
::::pauses music so he can type::::
this illustration is not me at all… I’ve got an ipod touch and am working on a desktop
RevRod says
Sometimes it’s music … other times it’s podcasts … but there’s always something playing to offset the low level monotone of fluorescent lighting.
Lori says
Oh goodness that is me!!
Jody says
I can’t work without music. But what’s strange is that I listen to a lot of Drum & Bass, Vocal Trance, etc. Stuff I don’t listen to in the car or any sort of normal basis. Just when I’m working.
PhillipGibb says
I wish I could, but apparently it is distracting (well – to those that need to call me from the other side of the room) funny – I always listened to music when I needed to focus.
