This weekend is Father’s Day as my wife reminded me where we get to honor our dad for everything that they have done for us. This concept in the social media age may have taken on a new role with an expected flurry of dad photos that will be popping up on every social media and nearly every friend and follower where we thank our dad.
That’s a cute idea, but my friend KC Procter has decided to go the extra mile with a month long series of #DadLifeRules tweets and complimentary blog articles on how dads rule with a unique quote from someone on Twitter every single day this month.
You can actually see one of my submissions to KC Procter on this topic:
Love them. When they screw up. When you’re too busy. When they don’t want it. When you feel you can’t give anymore. http://t.co/od4ZcCkSgX

This makes me instantly start to think about how we as the church can use social media in general this holiday for engaging well online. Here are four off the top of my head that you can try to kick in last minute for your church service!
- Tweet A Photo Booth
Create a “I <3 My Dad" photo booth with great props and a generic background for Sunday morning before and the service. Then during the service, using Photoshop or an overlay, share the photos with warming Scripture. Afterwards, tweet, pin, and Instagram all the photos and tag the right people. Even better, use a church hashtag! - Share Dad Quotes
You have the pulpit and tons time to post to social media, make the most of it. Ask your congregation to tweet or post funny hashtags like Jimmy Fallon does on his Late Night show. If you are super savvy, during your wrap up of the sermon where you communicate the point for the third time, have someone post the best tweet on the projector screen. - Youth Groups Mass Facebook Posts
As a youth pastor, I am always looking for ways to connect teenagers with their parents. Sometimes that is supporting parents, but this moment gives you the opportunity to encourage your teenagers to start the dialogue. Have them post at youth group why they love their dad and tag them. When you say go, everyone hits post and then parents will in mass get these notifications and hopefully a few rekindled relationships too. - Give Them A Heartfelt Video
I just said video and you are instantly having painful flashbacks to video edits or working with technical cameras. No! Go simple, but gather amazing stories here. Use your iPhone or a simple camera, add jump cuts between stories, and go film church staff, leaders that came in for meetings, or other congregation members you can get ahold of last minute.
These may be simple ideas, but they are also last minute ones. Don’t waste this opportunity you have by not engaging with your congregation. Go say thank you to them in every way you know how and let the world know you have the best men for fathers!
