WordPress.com users have will have one less reason to leave for a self-hosted WordPress.org blog.
Yesterday, it was announced that Automattic and Federated Media is teaming up to present millions of WordPress.com users the power to place ads on their blogs.
The partnership, which the two companies announced at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, will allow brands and advertisers to target participating WordPress.com site owners in order to reach the audiences that are relevant to them.
This is huge.
Just as Google and Facebook can access user data to better advertise to the user, and more effectively for the advertiser, WordPress.com will have similar power when targeting ads based on blog content.
Federated Media CEO Deanna Brown said:
We’re bringing contextual advertising to highly desirable audiences.
She’s not kidding.
There are currently 63+ million WordPress sites on the web, half of which are hosted on WordPress.com.
Here are a few other key WordPress.com metrics:
- 308+ million people view over 2.5 billion pages each month.
- There are 500,000 new posts everyday.
- An average day brings 400,000 new comments.
How’s that for an ad revenue pool?
If you’re a WordPress.com user, don’t worry about being forced to participate. Placing ads on your blog is completely optional, but could be a great way for you to generate some revenue, too!

For some reason I see this going badly, but until then I’ll take the cash.

I’m thinking there will be lots of strings attached.

I think Ill pass on having ads on my site…..unless it was simple for me to get money from having them on there.
I could see having to have a certain amount of views per day/week/month/year for them to pay you for having their ad on your site.
Eric Dye says
It’s good to have the traffic to warrant it, first.
