Football (the American variety) is fantastic. Basketball is choreographed adrenaline. Baseball? Tennis? Curling? Cool.
Still, no sport compares to real football. “Soccer” for most North Americans
Now that we have that out of the way, I love one of the latest concepts out soccer powerhouse Adidas. Not only are they leading the way with lighter boots (no, I won’t say “cleats”), they are coming out with enhanced balls that give feedback.
Creatively backed by a three year research project, the Smart Ball is a sphere chock-full of sensors, and looks to enhance performance by interfacing with companion pieces (like an app on the user’s smartphone), providing constant analytical feedback data that can assist with training goals. Beyond that, I can see other entertainment uses. In the hands of the right gameday crew, it could be an interesting highlight accessory. Who has the more powerful shot, Messi or Ronaldo? In case you are wondering, that is a SERIOUS question.

There is also the fun aspect, as highlighted in the video. An interesting usage example, decked with virtual projection similar to that seen in golf swing simulations, is seen here.
The Smart Ball is not yet ready for prime time with consumers, but it is expected to be out and about in time for the Brazil 2014!
