I’m a super-fan of CSS but since I’m more of a programmer than a designer I constantly think of things in terms of software programming and CSS is not software programming.
So, that’s where preprocessors come in! These things help add variables, constants, and other pieces of syntax that helps make CSS faster and more clean. These variables on CSS can then be passed to regular CSS stylesheets.
