I’ll be honest with you … wait … I hate when people say that. It makes me wonder if they’re telling the truth when there’s no “truth disclaimer.”
When I first started tinkering around in WordPress it was usually on the user-end. Tinkering with the Admin side of things seemed … well .. scary!
Boo!
See, I told you it was scary.
Eventually, I felt the need to tweak the Admin side of things. I had “broken” the user-end side enough times and successfully fixed it, the fear of un-repairable damage seemed a tad silly. So, let me tell you from personal experience: Do not fear … have fun!
Here are 10 Techniques for Customizing the WordPress Admin Panel from the Cool Dudes over at Six Revisions. Do any of these strike your fancy? If so, check’em out!
- Remove the Admin Bar
The only reason you want to do this, is if you didn’t want Editors, clients, or Authors using the Admin Bar, since you can turn it off in the user settings. Why would want to turn it off? Sometimes the new Admin Menu Bar pukes. - Specify the Auto-save Interval
If you need me to explain what this is, you might should reconsider editing your WordPress Admin. - Disable Auto-save
I’m considering this one, since I’m doing the next one: - Reduce or Disable Revisions
WordPress has no limit to the number of revisions. So, if auto-save is running and a writer leaves his browser open … ya … you get the idea! - Empty Trash Automatically
Want to set your WordPress trash automatically empty every five days? This is how you do it. - Remove the Visual Editor
This is a God-send for those who don’t want their HTML markup screwed-up by mistakenly flipping over to Visual. - Edit the Help Dropdown Text
This a is really cool edit. You can add custom Help info for your client or back-end users. - Change the Contact Info Form
Add fields, remove fields – this is how you tweak your back-end user profiles. - Change Role Capabilities
Good-bye role capabilities plugin. (Be sure to read his important note) - Check User Capabilities
Just like above, except this one tweaks what the back-end user SEES!
Anything look worthwhile?
