Remember when Flash was cool?
Now, Flash is used more for online movie rips than anything else.
The final nail in the coffin: HTML5
Canvas Minimal Particle Animation

… and HTML5 is very young.
Now, let the hate mail begin.

HATE!!!
Just kidding! These are beautiful examples… thanks for posting. I started in Macromedia Flash way-backer in the day than I’m comfortable admitting. I gave up on it when ActionScript 3 came along, and I have to say, I’m a little ok with seeing it fade away. It’ll be missed, and remembered, but the future holds no “loading” bars, and that’s AWESOME!

Me, too!
I know exactly what you mean.
Everyone in favor of no loading bars, raise your hands!

The etchaPhysics link doesn’t work. Is it incorrect or did the domain like, expire?
Eric Dye says
That’s a FAIL.
I tested them all when I posted. I actually had to throw one out.
Like Flash, that link is … well .. you know.

I agree that moving away from Flash is a good thing, but I’m slightly wary of these “awesome examples” of HTML5 that I’ve been seeing lately. Personally, it reminds me of the old days when Flash was just getting started and people were making ugly, slow, and quite pointless demonstrations of its “power” to show off to their friends. Inevitably these so-called features were integrated into websites, causing frustration amongst the ranks of everyday users (yes, grandma, I mean you). I just hope HTML5 animation doesn’t go the same route.
That being said, if developers use HTML5 animation in an unobtrusive way that can better the usability of the web, then they have my full support. I can see it being very useful for slight animations that respond to a user’s actions, just like Apple does with their slides, rotates, and wobbles. 🙂 It’s when you get into using HTML5 for HTML5’s sake that you have a problem.
/rant 😉

Good rant.
You’re totally right.

I couldn’t agree more. Everything a web developer does MUST keep the user in mind, including Grandma.

Words to dev by.

i just wanna say that i prefer to use adobe flash CS6 for animating. a lot of my favorite youtubers use it to create their animations. they really are talented. some are stick figure animators (most from Hyun’s Dojo).
all of those guys plus more are a big inspiration to me.
Eric Dye says
Yeah. I think it was overstated to say that Flash is dead. It’s dead in the sense of how it was being used, but it is still very alive and well in how it’s kind of reinvented itself and remained somewhat relevent. 🙂
