Tapes. That’s what my folks used to hand-deliver to the house-bound church members. It’s no surprising that sharing church sermons continues to be a key function for many church tech teams. But as technology continues to evolve, the way we share sermons has to as well.
WPsermons is a new project from Steve Gliebe, the creator of the popular WordPress themes — Church Themes — seeking to provide the best way to share sermons with a WordPress site.
What is WPSermons?
WPSermons is a WordPress plugin that will be compatible with any WordPress theme. It promises to provide the best way to upload, manage and access sermons for website managers and website visitors.
How will WPSermons be different from other sermon plugins?
Like the many other sermon management plugins for WordPress — include the sermon features within Steve’s own Church content plugin — WPSermon will cover any of the standard aspect you expect including
- Uploading audio and video sermons
- Uploading sermon notes
- organizing sermons by series, speaker, topic, tags and book of the Bible
- and publishing as a podcast.
WPSermons, however, promises to go beyond these table stakes. Some of the less common and unique features include
- Universal theme support (including page builder themes like divi and elementor)
- Gutenberg block support
- Non-sermon archives (for events like Sunday school, interviews etc)
- Image and social sharing support (so sermons appear beautifully on both your site and social networks)
Do we really need another sermon plugin?
As there are already so many sermon plugins out there, including features in Steve’s other plugin, you might wonder if there is really a need for a unique plugin. Personally, I think that’s the wrong question. If people are interested, and it has a unique place, then we do need it.
More competition helps drive innovation and Steve certainly believes that WordPress sermon plugins could be improved.
While I am unsure if my church will switch our site to WPSermons, I will be certainly glad to have the option of using WPSermons and the possibility of moving to a different theme (for context, we currently use one of Steve’s Church Themes and use the Church theme content plugin too).
