WordPress 3.2 is due out this year and is going to be making a major shift in terms of the libraries on which it depends.
Specifically, WordPress is going to require PHP5.
For those of you managing several WordPress installations for your organization or for those of you self-hosting your website, ensuring that your servers and machines are running PHP5 is going to be key.
Infact WordPress runs better on PHP 5 than it does on PHP 4. PHP 4 is outdated and WordPress is not much tested to run on it any longer (not as much as PHP 5 by far at least).
And for many plugins and themes this is the same, PHP 5.2 is supported right now on most hosts.
A New Years’ Resolution for your IT team, perhaps? 🙂

I think that is great news! Can’t wait to see what else is under the hood.

Yeah – we’re pretty pumped about this, too.
There are some PHP5-specific features built into Standard Theme and Live Theme and we had to make some compromises for compatibility.
That won’t be the case anymore.

About time! Hopefully this will bring a lot of web hosting companies out of the dark ages!

Good to know. Thank you! I have two wordpress blogs that I self-host for our church. Going to be learning a lot more about this stuff as they get developed. 🙂
