I thought Google Translate was cool, so I’m not sure exactly what category you would place this iPhone app.
Quest Visual has created an iPhone app that translates Spanish to English and English to Spanish in real-time. Simply use your iPhone like it was a video camera, and it translates the written text into the opposite language. It does this in such a way, that it’s as if you took a still picture and worked a little Photoshop magic to replace the text. It’s absolutely crazy!
Watch this video of Word Lens in action:
As of now, the app is free and only on the iPhone. The creators of the app, Quest Visual, wants to successfully launch on the iPhone first, and then begin to add additional platforms – Android, WinPhone7, Palm, and Blackberry.
Although the app is not designed to read books, it is the perfect travel solution for sure! From road signs to food menus, this is an application that has plenty of room to grow, and Quest Visual plans to do just that. They are currently working on expanding the number of languages, and they have no plans at stopping until they’ve covered them all.
Here’s another video of Word Lens, being used on a Mexican food restaurant menu:

Another great aspect to Word Lens is that it doesn’t require a network connection.
Love it!

how are you getting it for free? in order to do any language stuff they want $20

That’s a good question for Apple. I’m not sure how they get away with listing a language translation app listed for “free”, but then charge $20 to translate a language. Good call.
