Windows XP finally died.
Windows Vista was a nice try.
Windows 7 was solid.
Windows 8 is …
… here.
Are you ready to upgrade?
For the first time, Windows users can upgrade for about as cheap as an Apple user upgrades OS X.
I have an older XPS machine that’s running Windows 7, and with a price point of $39.99, I’m fairly confident I’ll be upgrading it. I was pretty impressed with the Windows 7 improvements and stability, so my hopes are fairly high that Windows really landed on something with Windows 8. I’m anxious to see where this tablet/desktop/laptop integration and synergy leads them.
For those of you running Windows, will you be making the jump soon?
Maybe you already have!
Are you in?

I’m considering it.
I’ve got an old Win Vista machine…it could CERTAINLY stand the upgrade. Not sure about the 3 family laptops yet though.

I always take a deep breath before upgrade anything. Maybe it’s the old, ‘if it ain’t broke …’

I’m still on the fence. I have a USB TV tuner I use with Media Center on my 7 machine, and it didn’t work on Win8 Release Preview, so I’ve got to be sure that driver will work with 8 before I upgrade.
Eric Dye says
It’s good to keep a cool head about these things. Sometimes an initial release won’t support something you need and they resolve it a week or month later. Or you realize you’ll need a new solution, as there will never be compatibility. Good move on your part.

I’m upgrading my work PC at this very moment. I was on Windows 7 and the only piece of incompatible software I had was Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. Gotta upgrade that to Visual Studio 2012 ($499)
Eric Dye says
OUCH!

I got a free upgrade because I just got a new PC. Unfortunately it crashed this morning so I have to repair my win 7 before I can upgrade! Grr
Eric Dye says
That’s one serious, “WAH-WAH!”

Which Windows 8 do you mean? Windows 8 Windows 8? Or Windows 8 RT? Or Windows Phone 8? It still baffles me why Microsoft would want to market three distinct platforms with one name. Maybe if they took a hint from Apple, and came up with two platforms instead of three, called Windows X and Windows Mobile (even though they already have a “Windows Mobile” product that is now dead). Then we would at least know what you are talking about?
Eric Dye says
wah-wah
Matt Brier says
I’m running it on my personal laptop. I like the interface changes as far as the live tiles. There are some other changes that definitely had a tablet in mind that I’m less enthused about. Browsing the music or the application store is a bit kludgy with a mouse.
Eric Dye says
Hmmm. The tension that occurs when you’re developing an OS for such different devices …

Once you go Mac, you never go back.
Eric Dye says
True story.

You bet!

Just upgraded my desktop machine from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro for that $39.99 price. Upgrade went very well. Had a couple minor issues that were resolved when my machine completed some Windows updates post install. I think Windows 8 will, in the long run, prove to be a wise move by Microsoft.
Eric Dye says
Cool! Glad the upgrade went well! I’ve heard nothing like the Vista upgrade horror stories. 🙂
