I day dream a lot.
In fact, despite the amount of focus that’s required to really get stuff done (especially) when you’re in the middle of programming, I find it a healthy distraction; and it gives my brain a much-needed opportunity to rest.
I took one of these breaks late last night and I suddenly had an urge to go through some of my archived applications of old – some had seen some better days while others wouldn’t even run because of the deprecated code and environments.
Good times, good times…!
One of my favorite ones was created in Visual Basic which was a mix between a storybook choose-your-own-adventure and rudimentary animation.
It was a crowning work in my book!
So, I ask you: What was one of the first apps you ever built? How did it make you feel?
Tom says
One of my first apps was an AOL Proggie written in VB3. Embarrassing.
Yohan Perera says
A POS system for my fathers shop… Using a Visual Foxpro π
Tom says
Ha, FoxPro! Almost forgot about that ;).
Jeremy says
I guess it depends on how you want to define ‘app’, but the first thing I ever did that I wanted to share with others was a small Craps game written in GW-Basic. π
Tom says
Awesome!
But yeah – you bring up an interesting point. I think the definition of ‘app’ has changed recently.
Andrew Mason says
Borland’s Turbo C++ Compiler. A three stooges slapping “game”. If you can call it that. π
Tom says
First app was in C++? Hardcore :).
Dave eubanks says
First app that worked for me was a program that went through pic folders and allowed you to quickly delete, rename, and relocate individual pics. I started in c#.
Tom McFarlin says
Ha, neat. I remember writing stuff like that, too.
I don’t do as much desktop development now, but I used to try to do a lot of stuff with file management.
I often deleted things I didn’t mean to delete, though….. π
