With Disney’s new live-action movie of The Lion King, everyone’s filled with nostalgia as we rewatch the original and see the live-action one bring it to life, but when I saw this video on The Kimba VS Simba Controversy I felt kinda sick. It got me thinking about what christians can learn from the Kimba vs Simba controversy.
Maybe you didn’t feel sick after watching this. But you hopefully see that what happened was not okay.
Having Privilege and Power in the World
I have a lot of thoughts on this whole video but the main one being that resourced people have more power and privilege over everyone else and how they use them is so important. Disney used theirs to silence the creator of this story that they sold off as their own and they got away with it because of it.
This happens over and over and over again in the world. And while we don’t all have the privilege and power that Disney does, we do have more than we even realize and how we use it matters, especially as Christians.
Having Privilege and Power as Christians
The thing about privilege is that you can give it to other people. So if you’re feeling guilty for being more privileged than other people, than instead feel enabled to share it.
As Christians, we should be conscious and sensitive to how we can enable others and pass on our privilege. And sometimes we’ll get it wrong, and sometimes we’ll miss chances that are offered to us to do so, but I think it’s something we can train ourselves to be aware of if we try.
Our privilege should give us a feeling of empowerment to in turn empower others, and not that of entitlement. It might just be time to think about what privilege we have.
What were some of your thoughts after watching this video or just the Kimba vs Simba controversy?
