A frame-by-frame conversion of media to it’s final form.
A reason to tie up your computer’s processor.
And, if you edit video, the perfect excuse for why you look like you aren’t working.
Apple’s Compressor program, a part of Final Cut Studio, is a well-rounded solution for producing multiple file-formats from a single piece of media. You specify an input file, and out pops Youtube, audio podcast, DVD, and “Sunday Morning Auditorium” ready versions of your file.
How’s it work? Here’s a quick video-overview of some of Compressor’s capabilities.

We’ve only scratched the surface, and you can further familiarize yourself or create a Vimeo preset if you’re feeling daring.
But we’re especially interested in what you use Compressor for. Or, if you don’t use compressor, how do you prepare media for Sunday morning or weekly export?

We currently edit in Edius then export via ProCoder which allows encoding in multiple formats at once. We’re working towards capturing/editing in Final Cut Express – as much as I’d love to get Final Cut Studio, the price difference is significant. It’s definately the next purchase I’ll be pushing for though.

I have Compressor and Episode Pro, but I end up using VisualHub 90% of the time. It’s just so easy, and it’s faster too.
For audio, I’m a big fan of Sound Grinder.

very cool, well presented.
One nice thing is that you could shut down Compressor after submission and the tasks keep going in the background – shutting down the app saves on resources – of course the Batch Monitor can be used to keep tabs on the progress; but that’s another tutorial 🙂
Questions: When I setup my export setting for Church, vimeo etc, I find that if I have Frame Controls on with Quality High that the task somehow gets stuck. Ever had that?
Also, when it comes to compressing for whatever Sunday Services presentation app you use (we use ProPresenter4) do you have a preferred basic set of export settings? Probably depends on what you are outputting?

Thanks man :). Definitely on batch monitor.
1. Never had that happen! If it happens every time, maybe it’s a “feature”? 🙂
2. We do. Our Sunday morning export is NTSC or H.264 720×480 quicktime. Dimensions would be higher if we shot in HD 🙂

Just realized I went pretty heavy on the smiley faces.
Sorry…..I’m a happy guy.
