We’ve mentioned before that as a team we’re using Yammer as a back-channel and communications tool. It’s not perfect but it’s been essential to our team’s health and productivity.
Some, though, want to use a more Open Source app and StatusNet might be the thing for you too if that’s how you roll:
Essentially StatusNet is an open source microblogging platform that helps you share and connect in real-time with your own domain. Collaborate, engage with your team (or community), and more:
- Groups: Your members can track and follow notices relating to specific topics and connect with others who share common interests.
- Popular Notices: StatusNet features real-time status checks for what’s popular within your network.
- File Sharing: You can easily share rich media files, such as photos, videos, and office documents.
- Interface with Other Social Networks: Share your status with other social network accounts, such as Twitter and FaceBook.
- Mobile and Desktop Access: Your users can connect and communicate from any desktop or smart phone. StatusNet supports Linux, Mac and Windows operating systems and most common smart phones.
- Plug-ins: Find or build your own plug-ins to make your micro messaging environment unique. With new plug-ins being developed regularly, you can add more functionality to your environment based on your needs.
- Customizable Interface: StatusNet gives you the freedom to customize your micro messaging environment. Through themes and clients, you can maintain your brand identity and provide a unique user experience.
We thought about it and we may still consider it. I also thought it would be interesting to use for the 8BIT Community at large – thoughts?
