When it comes to the web, I think that it’s very easy to toss around a lot of popular buzzwords without the proper context.
As HTML5, CSS3, and other modern browser technologies become more and more popular, it’s becoming much more common to hear phrases such as “the semantic web” being used.

I was under the impression that XHTML never stuck, and development was being phased out in favor of HTML 5?

XHTML actually became a bit more standard than vanilla HTML and I’d say most modern Web 2.0 sites are based on it.
HTML5 is actually preceded by XHTML. HTML5 is going to support a number of new tags and support for media most of which are already common across the web, just lacking proper tags and semantic markup to describe such elements.
And if that’s not confusing enough, XHTML5 is part of the specification for HTML5…
