Oh, yeah.
We waited and it’s finally here.
Coda 2 dropped last week and made quite the splash with a 24hr 50% price break.
Have you taken Coda 2 through the paces?
What do you think of it? Likes? Dislikes?
I’ve found the code folding great, but there are a few features that immediately blew me out of the water:
- Built in MySQL Editor
Seriously! This is amazing! This takes the whole “one window editor” to a new level. Absolutely blew me away. - “Revolutionary New CSS Pops”
This is what the website called them. “Revolutionary” seemed a little dogmatic, but it is really slick! I clicked around a bunch to watch it! - I Don’t Know What the Heck It’s Called
I don’t know what the heck you call these, but they’re slick:
Like I said, I’ve just toyed with it at this point and have yet to navigate through a project with it (later this week, maybe). What I’ve seen so far has really made me squeal.
Tell me, what do you think about Coda 2?
What do you like and/or dislike?
Would love to hear it!

I haven’t got to dive in and check out all the new features yet, but my favorite thing so far is Coda 2 Themes! I usually code with light text on dark background, and Coda 2 had a few great built-in themes, and more can be downloaded from iPaintCode here: http://ipaintcode.com/coda-2-themes/

Great link — thanks, Ben!

I was thinking about taking a look at it, but I have started using Sublime Text 2 and now, I am not sure if I will be able to go back to Coda.
Eric Dye says
What are your favorite features with Sublime Text 2?
Jason Bradley says
It…is…awesome in my book. Definitely worth the $75 upgrade price. There are a few bugs here and there, but they are resolving them quickly. The clips and tab triggers is my favorite feature. I have some code clips that have really helped me speed up my development work. You can’t put a price tag on being able to do more in less time. Time is money! 🙂
Eric Dye says
True! Have you added the code clips yourself, or do you have a favorite place on the web to nab’em?

Bought it since i have been using TextMate for the last 3+ years and thought it would be a nice change… I really hate it for a few reasons (note I am a pretty heavy user – it is probably fine if you are just messing with open source/third party stuff).
-mySQL browser bugged me. This could be that my primary project has a dynamic DB environment, but the interface and browser seemed subpar to phpMySQL which has been around forever.
-Only one project at a time… again I’m a power user but the fact that I can only have one project open at a time is a near deal killer.
-Very slow… Granted my primary project has over 2k files in it. but it would take 10+ seconds to open a new file. But still, it never found any of my custom classes or functions like it touted and it is using a pretty basic php OOP setup.
-It auto comments lines in php with /* */ instead of // (style issue I know, but it matters to me).
-Preview was almost awesome. The biggest problem here is that it does not maintain session/cookie data across the open files. this really screws over the usability of just hitting the preview tab to see what it looks like for secure content. I like the ability to change user agents on the fly and it has the same webkit dev tools… but the session/cookie issue is a deal killer.
Overall I am probably not the audience for this software but was really excited to try it, and then really disappointed once I used it for a couple days.

Great feedback, Paul, thanks!
Like you said, you’re probably not the audience for this app, but I’m grateful you shared your experience, here. VERY helpful!
(Are you back in France?)

The path bar is awesome (that’s the awesome after the &!!!). Also love the side by side files/ftp interface.
Also being able to group sites (like ios drop site on another to create a folder/group).
And the diet coda ios app and ‘air preview’ – HOW THEY DO THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?
Eric Dye says
I’ll have to check out the group sites! Thanks, James! #protip

I have this and the iPad app. Being able to ftp and fix sites while out and about is a nice feature for me and well needed. Can’t wait to get some extensive usage in Coda 2 and Diet Coda for the iPad this month and the coming year.
