Technology seduces us every day.
“Turn me on,” it says.
“Come close,” it asks.
“Touch me,” it pleads.
The television. The computer. The smartphone.
Technology seduces us at every turn.
Apple Computers
The Apple logo is fitting.
Like Adam and Eve, we are drawn to the knowledge and ideals of technology.
I’m not going to pretend I know anything about the history of Apple or the rationale of their logo, but considering how Steve Jobs (at age 26) describes, or perhaps predicts, the coming seduction of technology is incredible:

Did you get that?
“So, life is already seducing you into learning this stuff. It’s not going to happen at once and it certainly not a 1984-ish vision at all. It’s just going to be very gradual and very human and we’ll seduce you into learning how to use it.”
I think there is a warning in this statement.
It’s A Human Thing
As Christians, we should have a leg-up on this. We should have a deeper understanding of life as a whole. We know there is life beyond flesh and bone, beyond circuits and plastic. There is a spiritual element that we should be attuned with that transcends both time and technology.
It’s a human thing.
Our flesh cries out. We battle it every day. Our flesh, our human-ness, is something to be fought against as we become more Christ-like. We should be keen to the fact that technology today—smartphones, social networks, YouTube, etc..—has become so much a part of our human experience, it has the potential to overtake us, just like any other pleasure of our flesh. The things technology brings us isn’t bad or wrong, just as sex isn’t bad or wrong, but it can overtake us as it tries to seduces away from Godly things.
Put it Down
Christians are called to a new way to be human and our use of technology should be the same—different.
Understanding technology’s seductive qualities and its appeal to our humanness, can help us keep technology in its rightful place and help us know when to sign out, turn it off and put it down.
Like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, know when to put down the apple and refuse to take a bite.
