As we look back at 2013, there are a number of tech products that have vanished! Gone!
The Internet has lived a short life, but we’ve seen a lot come and go, and rise and fall as the technology tidal wave roars by month after month. It makes me wonder what 2014 will bring!
Take a look:
- HTC First — The Facebook Phone
It was axed just months after its release. - Apple iPhone 5
While the iPhone 4S is still here, the iPhone 5 has vanished with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C coming on the scene. - Winamp
Rockin’ since 1999, Winamp bids farewell this month. - MySpace Classic
“Unfortunately, when the new MySpace made its official debut, it also meant that all vintage MySpace content ceased to exist. That means that photos, blog entries, comments and messages from before June 2013 no longer exist. The worst part? MySpace didn’t give users (or the Internet Archive) a warning that the big refresh was coming, meaning many users were left blind-sided when their memories just disappeared.”
Can you imagine!
- AltaVistsa
In the Internet’s short life, we’ve seen the mighty rise and fall. Purchased in 2003 by Yahoo!, I’m not sure what they were thinking. - Lavabit
If you don’t know what happened with Lavabit and it’s connection with Edward Snowden, read more here. - Google Checkout
Ah, yes. Another Google product bites the dust. Another example of Google not being able to land payment gateways while PayPal alternatives — like Strip and Square — are fairing well. - Blockbuster Video
These business that are built on the rising tide of tech with old business mindsets, will all find this kind of demise as the arch of technology moves on. - Google Reader
Oh, yes, this made the biggest splash in 2013. - Standard Theme & 8BIT
This sent shockwaves through all the Standard theme users and even caused ChurchMag to change its course on the redesign.
It’s funny to think about Google Reader vanishing this past year. It made quite the splash, and as I reflect about it a moment, I think I am better for it.
Now, back to my RSS feed…while it lasts…
What do you think could vanish in 2014?
Feedburner? RSS? Vine?
I do know the ChurchMag logo will be vanishing in 2014…. 😉

I doubt RSS is going anywhere for a while given podcasts are very popular and tend to use it.
I know this is really uncool to say, but I still quite like Blogger and have some of my online content there. I think it remains a good solid, low fuss tool for simple sites. But given what the axing of Google Reader showed about Google’s willingness to cut products with a smaller than in the past but still loyal user base, I have concerns about its future.

I would be really surprised if they axed Blogger, too!
