This week, we are focusing on small time blogging and all the while using a pseudo case study of Frank who is a small time blogger and writes about designing and programming iOS applications.
When I introduce to people that I am a blogger, most people never have heard of my website. In fact, I think many of my family and friends do not necessarily know that I blog every day. Of course, they would not be interested in the content I write about, so it just never comes up in conversation. Being a small time blogger, it may seem to those looking in from the outside that we are at a disadvantage within the blogging realm, yet I want to share with you a few ideas that small time bloggers can do that big timers cannot.
- Engage With Your Whole Audience One of the biggest complaints I constantly here from blog readers about big time bloggers is that they simply do not engage with their audience enough. It would seem that the viewers have had some kind of personal connection with the authors and would many times love to engage in follow up conversations, yet time and energy on the author’s part simply warrants only a few engagements and in a very inconsistent manner. Small time bloggers thrive when someone comments on a social media update or blog post. As soon as another viewpoint or question is expressed, we want to have a great dialogue that usually brings one or both parties into new ideas. Frank takes every critique of his code he posts personally and may spend the proper time reevaluating what he had written all because he fully engaged his audience. Do not squander this ability as a small time blogger.
- Experimenting With New Ideas Whether you want to try a new blogging medium such as vlogging or quoting or you simply want to change direction with the content that you write about, small time bloggers have the ability to be flexible. Big time bloggers know that they have to have structure and respond to what is popular and so changing mediums or topics can result in failure and a negative monetary outcome. If a small time blogger fails, they can simply bounce back to the old way of writing with little to no repercussions. Frank may have a passion to write about iOS apps, but he also loves to play around this his theme, changing it every six months for no other reason than to tinker and be creative.
- You Have Free Time To Dream If big time bloggers are doing social media and blogging well, they are focused on constantly optimizing their advertising, marketing, and SEO needs. This means interacting as well as possible with all of the sales pitches, retweet requests, and non-blog-writing requests that come their way. This leaves little time to focus on creative and outside-the-box thinking that leads to innovation and better blogging. As a small time blogger, you have the capacity to do more with the time that you have (assuming you want to feed into the blog more) where the big time blogger would be coming up short. For Frank, this means that he can take the time to know where he want to go, day dream about “what-if’s” with his content, and even renew his passion for blogging. Too many big time bloggers become stale and grumpy about all the work it takes to blog that small time bloggers simply avoid.
So what about you? What advantages does small time blogging offer you?
