Skype, one of the most popular downloads in the Apple App Store, is apparently going to be coming to 3G.
This fact, that it wasn’t available, miffed me personally for quite some time; I honestly couldn’t believe that the lack of VoIP support over AT&T’s advertised “robust” 3G network has caused more than a few people to go:
Huh?
But, apparently it’s coming, soon. I think.
But I’m still excited. It’ll be here regardless of how long we wait, and I already begun thinking about it’s potential use for ministry and the Church.
Skype is just a freaking awesome app and I use it for business and personal use. It’s matured, in the desktop form, tremendously. It by no means is perfect but I’m comfortable with that and I’d rather use a mobile-version of a tested desktop-app than an unproven “neat” app that’s spankin’ new.
I’m hoping for big things. The Church needs some of this stuff.

Did you see that Skype and Verizon are partnered up? http://goo.gl/tVGY Which may not be so great for the iPhone –
“Possible bad news for iPhone owners as this exclusive deal may have had an effect on Skype’s upcoming 3G-enabled version of its iPhone app.”
But Skype on a mobile platform? Holy international calling, Batman!

Was just about to post the same thing. That may mean the wait is even longer than previously thought.

The wait may be even longer for those with the iPhone. However, for those with Verizon smartphone (a significant amount of people) it’s closer than ever before.

We can only keep on praying that the AT&T deal dies soon…
Bring on VoIP / Tethering and whatever other 2008 technologies AT&T still can’t handle!

A real plus would be to have the ability to record your skype conversations. I know many a podcast that records interviews and such over Skype. But to be able to use your iphone and an app to record those conversations would be killer.

June is almost hear. The AT&T monster may be dead by then, and iPhone users may at last have the chance to utilize a network worthy of the technology. Soon indeed.

I agree with you that I would much rather use a mobile app that is based off of a ‘proven’ desktop app. Same reason I wouldn’t buy a Hybrid car 10 years ago when it first came out. Let them work out all the kinks before I use it.
That said… I love being a part (although a small part) in beta testing the “Standard Theme”! 🙂
